Popular Mechanics' 'Project Camaro'
Ever since—at least—the classic James Dean-Dennis Hopper drag race in 1955's Rebel Without a Cause, souped-up sports cars have been part of the American folklore.
But with Popular Mechanics, "souped up" means upgrading in bodywork, technology and "mechanical magic" (not necessarily speed), which has been the signature for the Hearst Magazines monthly's "Top Shop" advertising section since its 2003 start. This time, it is the 2010 Chevy Camaro 1SS that gets the makeover (readers will see it in the May and June 2010 PM), and New York City pedestrians walking past Hearst Tower at 959 Eighth Avenue got a free viewing of Project Camaro on April 7.

Leading monthly men's magazine Popular Mechanics has commissioned Netcong Auto Restorations, LLC., to make over a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS for the magazine's annual Car Makeover feature, running in its May and June issues.

The goal of the 2010 Popular Mechanics Car Makeover is to build a super high-performance Camaro, with custom designed exterior body and creative paintwork, and a wide range of advanced electronic/computer technologies integrated into the interior, to make this a "must-own vehicle."
The vehicle will be completed by March 2010; the finished car will be featured at the Pocono 500, held at Pocono Raceway, which has long been recognized as one of NASCAR's most competitive speedways. The vehicle will also be showcased at Route 66 Car Show in San Bernadino, CA, and at the 2010 SEMA Show, November 2-5, 2010 in Las Vegas, the premier automotive accessories trade show in the world.The transformation of the Camaro will be chronicled in a two-part advertorial feature in the May and June 2010 issues of Popular Mechanics, as well as online at http://www.pmtopshop.com/
